Chilling Admission 'world's Most Famous Missing Tourist' Made to Mum on Phone Call Before Disappearing

German tourist Lars Mittank vanished in 2014

A German tourist would make a chilling admission to his mother before vanishing in one of the most bizarre missing person's cases.

In July 2014 Lars Mittank travelled with friends to a popular resort town near Varna, Bulgaria.

This would be the 28-year-old's first time outside of Germany but in a tragic turn of events, he would 'officially' never return home.

What should've been a fun trip away for the friends took a dark turn when Mittank's group - who were Werder Bremen fans - got into a disagreement with a bunch of Bayern Munich supports on the final night of their holiday (6 July).

The German national would separate from his friends later in the night and they wouldn't see him again until the following morning and told his friends he'd been attacked by a group of men hired by the Munich fans — suffering a injured jaw and a ruptured eardrum.

Due to the injuries which he'd allegedly suffered Mittank was advised against flying back to Germany with his friends. He instead checked into a nearby hotel and began taking the antibiotic cefprozil which had been prescribed by a local doctor.

It was here that Mittank would make a chilling phone call to his mother, where he said he believed he was being followed by people who wanted him dead and that she should cancel his credit cards.

"I thought, God, my son is in danger. I could hear his heart pounding over the phone," Sandra Mittank recalled of the conversation in an interview on German TV.

"He said people were trying to rob him or kill him."

Mittank would contact his mother once more to let her know he was at the airport, which is where security footage would capture him sprinting out of the departure terminal.

A doctor named Kosta Kostov is said to have treated him at the airport and noted that Mittank appeared to be acting in a 'nervous and erratic' manner during the consultation.

When a construction worker entered the office Mittank fled, yelling: "I don't want to die here! I have to get out of here!"

Airport security footage captured him running out of the airport, without any of his luggage or personal belongings, and into a nearby forest.

He was never seen again.

So, what happened to Lars Mittank?

The absence of any concrete evidence regarding Mittank's ultimate fate has led to numerous bizarre conspiracy theories cropping up over the years that Lars had been involved in drug smuggling, killed or trafficked.

Another theory suggested the German may have suffered a psychotic episode, with his injuries triggering a pre-existing condition such as schizophrenia also possible.

However, there is no evidence to back this up and what ultimately happened to Mittank will remain a mystery.
